These values are very similar to those registered in 2012, which indicates that TBT pollution has not decreased over the years, in contrast to the declining trend observed worldwide.While tourists contribute to and suffer the consequences of beach litter, studies on beach clean-up exercises have mostly neglected them and overly focused on resident beach goers. Based on a sample of 685 international tourists in Ghana, this paper examines the perception of international tourists on beach litter and the determinants of their willingness to participate in beach clean-up as an experiential activity during their visits to Ghanaian beaches. The findings reveal that international tourists have negative perceptions of beach litter, constructed along four domains, namely health, recreational activity participation, aesthetic, and coastal environment. Further, sex, age, educational attainment, continent of origin, travel party status, environmental value, and perception of beach litter significantly influence the willingness of the tourists to participate in beach clean-ups. The implications of these findings in the context of beach litter management at coastal resorts and destinations are discussed.Marine protection is one of the main Sustainable Development Goals designed by the United Nations. Epilepsy is more prevalent in men but Genetic Generalized Epilepsies (GGE) seem to be more common in women. A predominant maternal inheritance has been previously described in GGE. Our objective was to determine sex and inheritance patterns in a GGE population compared to mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLEHS). We performed a prospective observational study including adult GGE and MTLEHS patients followed up at a tertiary epilepsy center from January 2016 to December 2019. Patients' familial history was obtained by a detailed questionnaire. Clinical and demographic data was retrieved from clinical notes. A cohort of 641 patients, 403 with GGE and 238 with MTLEHS, was analyzed. GGE was more common in women than MTLEHS (58.8% vs 44.5%, OR=1.63, p=0.004). Compared to MTLEHS patients, more GGE patients had familial history of epilepsy (45.4% vs 25.2%; p<0.001). The GGE group had a higher percentage of female relatives with epilepsy (55% vs 37%; p=0.006). The prevalence of maternal inheritance was not different between GGE and MTLEHS groups (62.9% vs 57.7%; p=0.596). Photosensitivity was more common in females than in males (44.7% vs 34.3%, p=0.036). Normal pregnancy is associated with a rise in aldosterone and renin levels early in pregnancy making the aldosteronerenin ratio which is normally used to screen for primary aldosteronism, difficult to interpret. Additionally, many laboratories have moved from performing plasma renin activity to measurements of direct renin. Aldosterone, direct renin and aldosterone renin ratios were determined in 9 women with primary aldosteronism and compared to levels in 33 women with chronic hypertension. All women with primary aldosteronism had a direct renin levels of less than 20 mU/L together with aldosteronerenin ratio of greater than 40. Values for direct renin were significantly lower, and the aldosteronerenin ratio was significantly higher in pregnancy in women with primary aldosteronism compared to women with chronic hypertension. |
